Kids’ Reviews from the HCPL Summer Reading Program
Toddlers (Ages 1 – 3)
Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? • by Eric Carle
Aryan says… I like that at the end of the book it teaches you the names of animal babies, parents, and groups.
Can I Help? • by Marilyn Janovitz
Harper says… This was a perfect book to read to my toddler just before naptime. She loves to help me around the house and in the yard. She especially loves to nap together.
Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs • by Byron Barton
Caleb says… Great book! We loved the brightly colored illustrations and simple wording. Great for a toddler.
Picture Books (Pre K-K)
Tutus Aren’t My Style • by Linda Skeers
Kaitly says… I like Tutus Aren’t My Style because I am in ballet but I don’t always dance like a ballerina.
How Do I Love You? • by Leslie Kimmelman
Brandon says… I liked this book. I liked how the alligator jumped on the bed, and I also liked how his mom liked even his frowny face.
Goldilicious • by Victoria Kann
Michaella says… I love this book! I want my own unicorn.
Early Readers (Grades 1-3)
Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride • by Kate DiCamillo
Samantha says… It was the best book I have ever read in my life. It was so awesome, I want to read it again. But instead I am going to get a new one that is awesome too.
Homework Hassles • by Abby Klein
Trevi says… It’s a really good book and tells you about going to first grade. You learn about handwriting, homework, and trying to be more careful.
White Wolf • by Ron Roy
Sterling says… Very good book and talks a lot about Mother Nature. It also teaches you how to help animals around your subdivision.
Children’s Fiction (Grades 4-6)
Gold Dragon Codex • by R.D. Henham
Alejandra says… Daniel is an ordinary boy who comes to town with his family to take care of his grandma. When he meets Mollie and Rohan, strange things start happening. I like this book because it is a superhero story with a kid who has no superpowers.
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing • by Judy Blume
Dylan says… I am going into the fourth grade and my mom thought I should read it. It reminds me of the Judy Moody books because she has a troublesome brother just like Peter.
Finally • by Wendy Mass
Julia says… This book is really interesting. Wendy Mass really knows how to show feeling and emotion in her stories, especially this one! Rory goes to get her ears pierced and finds out she is allergic to gold, and her ear swells up like Horton the elephant in Dr. Seuss’s book!
Teen Fiction and Nonfiction (Ages 12 & up)
Claws • by Dan Greenburg
Amul says… This book was a real life story. You know the kind where it is too good to be true. It creeped me out in some parts but it was a wonderful book overall.
Eon • by Alison Goodman
Steven says… Absolutely stunning, full of place intrigue and political maneuvering, soul-searching and tragic loss, trust and betrayal, and swashbuckling adventure of the first order; this book deserves to be a riveting success.
Breaking Dawn • by Stephenie Meyer
Morgan says… Oh My Goddess! The book kept me in total la la land and it was great! I want the series to continue!
