Book Bites

Don’t Trust Fish by Neil Sharpson

This hilarious and sly picture book starts as an animal/nature book but it quickly goes off the rails when the fish cannot be trusted. Dan Santat’s illustrations make it a wonderful book for the four-to-eight-year-old set. And it’s a librarian’s dream to read aloud!

I Hate Everything by Sophy Henn

Big Ghost is in a very bad mood and declares that they HATE EVERYTHING! Small Ghost runs through a litany of fun activities and yummy treats, asking if Big Ghost really hates them after all. Having let go of the bad mood, Big Ghost declares that they LOVE EVERYTHING, and promptly gets the hiccups! Great for helping children (and adults) work through those days they’ve gotten up on the wrong side of the bed!

The Old Sleigh by Jarrett & Jerome Pumphrey

An old sleigh delivers firewood to members of the community. Over time, it breaks and needs repairs. Observant readers will notice time passing and the changes to the sleigh. Vintage Pumphrey artwork makes this a standout.

A Spoonful of the Sea by Hyewon Yum

A little girl is served the traditional Korean birthday soup – miyeokguk – instead of cake or ice cream. Her mother tells her the story of the haenyeo, the women who dive to harvest shellfish and seaweed, and how they learned to nourish new mothers with seaweed soup. A beautifully illustrated picture book honoring the important bond between women and nature and the culture of Korea. I love it

The Teacher of Nomad Land by Daniel Nayeri

During World War II in Iran, newly orphaned Sana and Babek only want to stay together. Separated and placed in unbearable living situations, they run away together. Carrying his father’s most prized possessions, books and a chalkboard, Babek realizes he is a teacher too, trying to bridge language barriers with those they meet. With the help of a soldier and other travelers, they are able to help another orphan, Ben, who is searching for his brother a long way from his home. A beautiful story told throughout the eyes of children as they search for belonging.

Lost Evangeline by Kate DiCamillo

In the magical land of Norendy, a cobbler discovers a tiny child in the toe of an old boot. He names her Evangeline and raises her to be brave, resourceful, and kind. But not everyone approves of Evangeline. When father and daughter are separated, Evangeline must rely on her wits and her courage—and a vainglorious cat—if she is to find her way back.

Busted by Dan Gemeinhart

A rollicking adventure for readers age eight and up. Oscar Aberdeen lives with his grandfather in the Sunny Day Retirement Community. But the new owner has decided to make the retirement community profitable, and is raising the rent far beyond what Oscar’s grandpa can afford. Then a new resident offers Oscar a chance to earn all the money they’ll ever need; all Oscar has to do is bust Jimmy “The Wrench” Deluca out of the facility and help him complete his bucket list in time for check-in. It’s funny, poignant, and perfect for kids who want a “quackin” good time.
