Main Street Theater Camp
Houston, TX, 77005
What do kids do at Main Street Theater Summer Camp?
EXPLORE: In addition to fun, fast-paced rehearsals every day in theater and playwriting, students will get to explore enrichment classes such as stagecraft Shakespeare, Commedia Dell’Arte, Greek Theater, and stage combat. (Dance classes are not offered at one-week sessions; enrichment classes are only offered at certain locations.)
CREATE: Your child already has the tools needed to love the arts and to create them: a voice, a body, and an imagination. At Main Street Theater’s summer camp, your young performer will be able to exercise those tools under the mentorship of theater and performing arts professionals.
SKILLS: Within each age group, students write and stage their ORIGINAL theater pieces and dance pieces, creating their own roles, lines, and choreography. They may base their piece on a story they know or characters they would like to portray, learning the fundamentals of acting and dance by applying them to the pieces they create. (Dance classes are only offered during two-week sessions.)
INCLUSION: Never been on stage before or were you born on stage? Everyone is welcome in our performing arts playground. Students of all skill and experience levels learn from each other in rehearsal, and our small classes ensure individual attention.
CHALLENGE: In our day-to-day class process and our final performances, every child will be featured and every child will be challenged.
PERFORM: At the end of each one-week, two-week, and three-week session, students present their plays and dance pieces on a professional stage! Family and friends are invited to attend free of charge!
ARTISTS: Energetic, professional teaching artists are passionate about education and ready to help your students explore the performing arts! They are actors, directors, dancers and educators, and they are experienced at working with students of all skill levels.
CONVENIENCE: Parents love our staff’s great communication, no-hassle production style, and all-in-one tuition fee. Check out our 3 summer camp locations to find the easiest one for your commute—in Midtown & Rice Village (the MATCH and Main Street Theater), and Bellaire (Bellaire Parks & Recreation). Before and after extended-day care is available for all full-day students (ages 6-14) at our Rice Village and MATCH locations.

The MainStage, located in the heart of Rice Village, receives national attention and offers compelling and engaging stories from the most insightful and articulate writers for the stage.
The professional Theater for Youth program, which performs at the MATCH in Midtown, produces plays based on children’s literature for ages 3 and up, including Sensory-Friendly, ASL Interpreted, and Audio Described performances for those who may need such accommodations.
MST’s Education & Integration Department provides creative opportunities – classes, camps, school residencies, and after-school programs - for youth ages 4 – high school.
We value ALL students and want to collaborate with families to ensure a great camp experience. Please let us know if there is anything we should be aware of regarding your child: food allergies, learning difficulties, chronic medical conditions, etc.
We offer Need-Based Scholarships for those students who qualify and if space is available. Please visit this link for requirements and more information.
Main Street Theater’s mission is to create theater that challenges its audience to think and its artists to grow. We accomplish this by presenting an articulate and compelling product in an intimate setting, creating significant employment for Houston-based artists, and memorable theatrical experiences for audiences of all ages.
Main Street Theater History
Founded in 1975, Main Street Theater produces innovative, thought-provoking plays for adults and children, and theater arts education/integration programs tailored to the needs of each school and community partner. We celebrate the human experience and spark open-minded conversations between the artists and the audience. We strive to create moments that allow for genuine connection between community members, visitors from outside of Houston, and our artists. We are committed to sharing compelling, thought-provoking and engaging stories from the most insightful and articulate writers for the stage – and to making our productions accessible to any and all who wish to take part. Main Street Theater’s three core activities – MainStage, Theater for Youth, and Education Department activities for children and teens – all share the goal of providing as many opportunities as possible for the enrichment and engagement of Houstonians of all ages.
Founding Artistic Director Rebecca Greene Udden established a collective of theater professionals in a temporary home at Autry House, the Episcopal Diocese’s community center on Main Street. Encouraged by critical acclaim and audience growth, in 1981 the company moved MST to larger quarters in Rice Village where the theater developed our intimate playing style in its 99-seat house. The MainStage now receives national attention and regularly draws audience members from other cities and states. In 2015 we completed a total renovation of our MainStage theater building, bringing our physical facility up to the high standards that have been on our stage for years.
In 1996, MST opened our second space, a 250-seat theater in Chelsea Market, dedicated to our professional Theater for Youth program (the most-attended in Houston) and to the presentation of large-scale MainStage classics and musicals. We outgrew Chelsea Market, and as of October 2015 our resident Theater for Youth productions now take place at the MATCH, the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston.
Our Arts Education & Integration Department provides creative opportunities – classes, camps, school residencies, and after-school programs – for youth ages 4 – high school at our two locations and at numerous area schools, community centers, and libraries.
