Over the past 23 years, the Houston Children’s Chorus has sung for countless audiences in our city, across the country, and around the world. We have performed for presidents and mayors, partnered with the Houston Symphony, engaged in summer programs with inner-city children, and much more. No matter where we are singing or who we are singing to, the goal is the same: to represent the finest of Houston’s children and to inspire hope and encouragement through singing and performance. Our versatility in being able to perform from memory an incredibly wide variety of music, has endeared us to the local community and has given us notoriety throughout the world. Our children also represent a complete “rainbow” of Houston’s diverse cultures.
We recently commissioned a major choral composition on the poetry of child-prodigy, Mattie J.T. Stepanek, who died just prior to his 14th birthday. This work was funded in part by a Mayor’s Special Initiative Grant and was premiered by the Houston Children’s Chorus at Stude Concert Hall on the Rice Campus and at Carnegie Hall in June of 2010. The Chorus was also featured in the first installment of “Houston Arts Television” on HoustonPBS. In January 2012, the Chorus recorded the “Coca-Cola” commercial for Mexico and South America.
High-profile performance opportunities are an important and integral part of the program and include two culminating choral concerts each year at a major city concert hall, most notably Stude Concert Hall on the campus of Rice University. In the past year, HCC’s Concert Choir performed over 60 concerts, including performances with the Houston Symphony, ribbon-cutting ceremonies in the Texas Medical Center, weddings, galas, civic events, corporate events and sporting events. This past summer, the Chorus was invited by Taiwan to perform concerts in Taipei as part of the 50th anniversary of the Taipei/Houston Sister City Partnership. Chorus members also experienced a 2 week choral residency and tour of Boston, Maine, New York and Pennsylvania. During its 23 years of existence, HCC Chorus members have had the opportunity to sing at such events as the Pre-game Ceremonies of Super Bowl XXXVIII at Reliant Stadium, The Vatican, Carnegie Hall, with numerous celebrities such as Celine Dion and Larry Gatlin, and for the President of the United States on 28 different occasions.
