Artist Boat is issuing a call for design proposals for seven benches along the seawall. Project SIT (Seawall Interpretive Trail) will transform the 70 concrete benches along the Galveston’s Historic Seawall. Artist Boat received a permit from Galveston County to tile the benches with educational mosaics with designs of our Coastal Heritage. To date, 18 benches have been completed.
Artist Boat is requesting design proposals for the following 7 themes:
- A Blaze of Color- Sunsets/ Sunrise- Light
- Not Your Average Dolphin- Gulf Marine Mammals
- Silly Springy Sargassum- Sargassum Seaweed
- Affecting a Sea of Change- Climate Change
- Reel It In- Tourism/ Recreation
- Coral Corral- Flower Garden Banks- Coral Reef
- Mall on the Dock- Former Farmers Market at Pier 19
Proposals should be in the form of scale color image of the proposed bench top. Selected artists will receive a commission to hand glaze tiles that Artist Boat will fire and have professionally installed. The commission includes all supplies and a $300 stipend.
Proposals are due for review by September 5. Applicants are encouraged to see the completed benches between 22nd and 29th streets. The Parks Board, The Galveston Arts Commission, The Chicken Shack Strut hosted by The Kitchen Chick, The Benji Family, and the Eubanks Family, have sponsored the benches in this round.
