Generator Safety Tips

Generator product

In light of recent devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, many Houstonians have purchased and are using generators as they wait for their power to be restored. But as more and more people become first time generator owners, it is important to remember essential safety tips and precautions to keep in mind when using a generator. The professionals at Northern Tool and Equipment have shared some critical information about how to keep safe when using and operating a generator.

“A generator can be an essential tool in the wake of power outages in order to continue with clean-up. Be aware of important safety precautions:

  • Plug appliances directly into the generator
  • Do not attempt to connect the generator directly to your home’s circuits or wiring. Have an electrician install a transfer switch and plug the generator into this switch. This will keep the generator from feeding power back into the lines, which could put power company crews working on the lines at risk. This will also protect your generator and home wiring from damage when power is restored.
  • Use heavy-duty extension cords from the generator, as overloaded cords can cause fires and equipment damage. Make sure cords are placed to avoid tripping hazards, but don’t put them underneath carpets where heat may build up.
  • Never run a generator indoors and make sure there is proper ventilation around the unit.
  • Never add fuel while the generator is running. Avoid spilling fuel on hot components and put out all flames or cigarettes when handling fuel.
  • Consider tri-fuel generators to avoid multiple trips to the gas station and downtime.
  • Always have a fully charged, approved fire extinguisher near the generator.
  • Don’t overload the generator. Use only when necessary to power essential equipment.
  • Be cautious handling electrical cords in wet conditions.”

These simple tips can make a world of difference when it comes to generator safety. Also, it is always better to reach out to a professional, such as those at the manufacturer of the generator, with questions about safety and the use of the product. With hurricane season still underway, knowing generator safety tips and having conversations about them is a must for Houstonians.
