The Houston Children’s Chorus (HCC), considered one of the top five children’s performing ensembles in the United States, was founded in 1989. During those 23 years, HCC has taught over 4,500 children to achieve high artistic standards through choral singing and performance. Under the artistic direction of Stephen Roddy, the Houston Children’s Chorus provides a comprehensive music education and performance program for children of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds from the greater Houston area.
High-profile performance opportunities are an important and integral part of the program and include two culminating choral concerts each year at a major city concert hall, most notably Stude Concert Hall on the campus of Rice University.  In the past year, HCC’s Concert Choir performed over 60 concerts, including performances with the Houston Symphony, ribbon-cutting ceremonies in the Texas Medical Center, weddings, galas, civic events, corporate events and sporting events. This past summer, the Chorus was invited by Taiwan to perform concerts in Taipei as part of the 50th anniversary of the Taipei/Houston Sister City Partnership. Chorus members also experienced a 2 week choral residency and tour of Boston, Maine, New York and Pennsylvania. During its 23 years of existence, HCC Chorus members have had the opportunity to sing at such events as the Pre-game Ceremonies of Super Bowl XXXVIII at Reliant Stadium, The Vatican, Carnegie Hall, with numerous celebrities such as Celine Dion and Larry Gatlin, and for the President of the United States on 28 different occasions.

Rehearsals for the Preparatory Choir, for children entering 2nd or 3rd grade, are held once a week in two locations: Central (St. Matthew Lutheran Church at 5315 Main St.) from 2:15-3:15 p.m. on Sundays and West (First United Methodist Church Houston/Westchase at 10570 Westpark Drive and Beltway 8) from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Rehearsals for Town & Concert Choirs are held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church from 2-5 p.m. on Sundays from September through April (excluding Holidays).
