ASK TEENA: December 2015

Dear TEENA,

My best friends have really nice big houses. I want to plan a sleepover at my house during our December break but I’m afraid they will judge me because my house is smaller and definitely not as nice as theirs. I met them this school year and haven’t asked them over because I’m worried they won’t like me anymore if they see my house. HELP!! Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

I totally understand how you feel. I attended Middle School in a small town in Maine where we lived for a few years. My house was a very large farmhouse in a tiny village that was it’s busiest in the summer. Many of my friends lived in very small apartments or homes in the town near my school. I had the same problem as you except with the exact opposite situation! I was afraid my new friends would judge ME because I lived in a larger house than most of the kids at school. I was really nervous for my first sleepover and worried way more than I should have. Here’s my advice.

#1. You said these girls were your friends, right? Well, friends don’t judge!! Honestly, yes, they might notice your house is smaller in size but they will quickly forget that as you start having fun. If one of your friends gets distant after the sleepover, then you should know she really doesn’t like you for you, and that’s ok. Move on! Don’t lose any sleep over friends who judge the size of your house.

#2. Sleepovers in a small house can be so much fun! I have friends with houses of all sizes and smaller is cozier but make sure you plan activities that work well in small spaces. If the weather isn’t too cold, sleeping outside in a tent is always super fun and breaks up space issues too.

#3. Be yourself and don’t make excuses for your house. This is YOUR home. Be proud of where you live and never feel you have to explain the size or location of your house to your friends. Real friends will like you for your kindness, support and common interests.

#4. HAVE FUN!! Sleepovers can be the best girl bonding time ever. You can learn so much about each other and just remember this. EVERYONE has a story….and the size of your house doesn’t define you!

Enjoy Hot Cocoa & Your Besties!

XOXO
