Mommy Moments: An inside look at the everyday lives of moms in our area

Name: Jessica Ligon
Occupation: SAHM, part time “Happy Mama” Marketing for Happy Family Brands
Kids: Jett (4), Jay (2)

HFM: What do you love most about being the mom of two boys?

JL: I love the unpredictability of raising such out of control, high energy, up for anything kids. We are on the go all the time and have so much fun! At the end of the day I get lots of “I love you momma” and hugs and kisses because of all else, they are mommas boys!

HFM: What is your favorite way to spend a Friday afternoon?
JL: I love making a day of the zoo/park/HMNS. We usually start the day at the zoo. We will check out the elephant baths, then I let the kids decide where to head next before we hit up story time at the children’s zoo. Then we catch the Herman Park train and get off close to the HMNS and check out a movie in 3D or walk through the dinosaur exhibit.

HFM: What types of activities do you guys do as a family?

JL: We love doing anything outdoors. Since it’s so hot during the summer, we love to go swimming. I have 2 little waterbeds who could swim all day. When the weather starts go get cooler we love to take walks in the evening and head out to our ranch on the weekends.

HFM: Let’s say you are meeting up with friends for a picnic lunch – what do you pack?

JL: My boys are big “snack” kids when it comes to lunches so I forgo the traditional sandwiches and instead pack homemade lunchables. I cut up nitrate free ham and pepperonis, add crackers and carrots. I always let them choose what we fruit we bring, but my favorite is organic apples. To keep everything cold, I like to throw our “Happy Family” pouches in the freezer so they double as an ice pack and a cold treat when they thaw.

HFM: What advice would you give to a new mom who is bringing home her baby for the first time?

JL: Every baby is different. Don’t put too much emphasis on benchmarks and percentiles. You know your baby best and your “momma bear” instinct will kick in and usually be right! Also, get connected! Being a mom is hard work and it truly takes a village. Get plugged into moms groups, play grounds, find Houston bloggers, churches and friends who can support you when you have questions, need moral support or just want to complain.
