Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream has recently rolled out its newest, somewhat unexpected, ice cream offering: a three-flavor combo with a specialty spicy topping!
The Houston-favorite ice cream shop features locations in the heart of the city, namely Montrose, the Heights, and the City Centre areas. They recently collaborated with chili sauce company Fly By Jing on a new spicy topping that will change your ice cream-going experience this summer. I instantly was drawn in by the idea and just had to try it for myself.
The pairing includes one scoop of three different flavors: dark chocolate, double chocolate chip cookie dough, and salted caramel, arranged in a waffle cone bowl. Then the topping is drizzled on the scoops and crunchy chili flakes are added on top. The topping is Fly By Jing’s Sichuan Chili Crisp sauce, which you can purchase online to have at home as well.
I will admit that I was interested in what the combination would taste like. The idea of sweet and spicy was not new to me, but I had never heard of it applied to ice cream in particular. I was not sure what the outcome would be, but I found myself pleasantly surprised!
The topping has a chili sauce consistency and the crunchy element adds pleasantly to the spice flavor. The heavier flavors of the chocolate and salted caramel already lend themselves to being added to more savory dishes, so the spice was able to blend with them naturally. The chocolate chip cookie dough pieces were also a treat with the spicy pieces. I found that the choice of flavors was smart and deliberate, as I don’t feel that fruit flavors would have worked with the spice.
I enjoyed my ice cream tasting at Jeni’s Montrose location, sitting outside on the thankfully not-too-hot summer’s day. This location has a plethora of outside seating options, including fun swings on the porch next to the doors of the ice cream shop, which also make for a great summer photo op!
