IT’S TIME TO BE TOGETHER AGAIN. And I must confess, I’m very excited!
After our time of isolation and un- certainty, the power of gathering in person, sharing our journeys, and seeking connections – THE POWER OF THEATRE – has never been more evident and necessary.
And while I wish to start again where we left off, I am compelled to imagine something more. I imagine our chance to reclaim, recommit, reengage, and rediscover the best of Stages. We are at a moment of powerful opportunity and, as was true hundreds of years ago, a dark time will lead to renaissance.
Imagine a renaissance.
Our 2021-2022 Season marks our largest investment in new work, centers Houston artists and local talent, features six world premiere productions, all with fan favorites and acclaimed work from the theatre canon. The season is a celebration of Houston’s indefatigable tenacity of the human spirit. And it is all ready to go!
Stages makes plays and tells stories that invite everyone to live more deeply and love more boldly. The common link throughout our work is a focus on sharing compelling human stories in intimate performance spaces that allow audiences to connect with both the art on stage and the people who help create it.
Stages has grown to become Houston’s sixth largest nonprofit performing arts producer overall, and the largest outside of Houston’s Downtown Theater District. Stages is one of the region’s leading artistic employers, producing an average of 12 productions per year totaling more than 430 performances and welcoming 75,000+ visitors each season. In January 2020, Stages opened The Gordy, a new $35.4 million three-theater venue that transforms how Houston artists and audiences experience theater.
Our shows are rehearsed and constructed on-site in Houston, brought to life by an exceptional community of local artists and crafts people along with occasional guest directors, actors, and designers from around the world. For more than a decade, Stages has made a strong investment in nurturing emerging artists and administrators who have now become field leaders and working professionals in companies around the country.
Experience live theater like you’ve never seen before. You won’t want to miss Hook’s Tale presented on the Sterling Stage at The Gordy, October 1-17. A long-lost journal from the notorious—and much maligned—Captain Hook offers the true tale of Peter Pan… and nothing is as you have been told! Award-winning playwright John Leonard Pielmeier (Agnes of God) joins Stages’ favorite Donald Corren (Bobby Riggs in Balls) to create a one-man tour-de-force that tells the Pan story from Hook’s point of view. Finally discover the friendly alligator, the helpful tick of the clock, the true love of the island’s indigenous population, and the real price of never growing old in this magical, theatrical romp for the whole family.
I’ll see you at the theater!
