Spring has sprung in Houston, and that means there are lots of opportunities for you to improve your living space. Creating a fresh look is easy and does not have to be expensive. Even a small change can create a significant impact, and by adopting a few design principles, you too can love where you live! Here are some top trending ideas for you to try that are easily accomplished in one afternoon and also fun too.
Create a Prominent Wall
All rooms need a focal point and using color or a pattern to emphasize your space easily draws the eye into a room. Paint one wall to accent and make a statement. Peacock blue, turmeric yellows and patterns are trending now. The combination of paint with patterned pillows will definitely brighten up and refresh your space.
Creative Concrete Countertops
This design concept is trending in the new construction scene; however, it can easily be applied to an older home as well. Also, mixing colors into concrete and then glazing is a great way to improve the aesthetics and completely transform a kitchen.
Flea Market Finds
Otherwise known as “repurposed” furniture, half the fun is in the finding of a perfect little table or chair and transforming it with paint, fringes, and patterns. Something as simple as an end table (given a little love) becomes a “conversation piece.” Try finding a chair or a stool and paint the legs a bright color such as red or bright blue. Then look for a pattern of floral, paisley or art deco patterns and cover the top. Add a little pop of color with a fun fringe and Voilà…you’ll love how it changes the up your space.
Use Washi Tape
Washi tapes have been used in Japanese interior design to create dramatic spaces with the use of patterns. The level of creativity and complexity is totally up to you. When you’re tired of a design…just pull off the tape! This technique is an excellent choice for creating an interesting playroom or as an added focal point on the prominent wall in a bedroom, which by the way is the wall that the bed is on…just FYI.
Whether you are looking to update the exterior of your house or just the fireplace, painted brick can transform your home for a nominal cost. This trend started a few years ago, but drive through any neighborhood, and you will see houses old & new embracing this concept.
Practice the Philosophy of Wabi Sabi
Wabi Sabi, (also used in Japanese design) is where the impermanence and imperfection of an item is its most cherished aspect. The goal is to create a lived-in look and feel. For instance, using imperfect materials from the past, such as an old wood plank or a cracked teacup as a vase for an African violet in your window sill; each has a history and also an imperfection that combines the past and present. What I love most about this concept is it allows for each of us to embrace things from the past and place it in a room where its history will live on.
The bottom line…your home should be a reflection of your family! Trends come and go and finding what makes your family feel “at home” should always be your first goal! Experiment and have fun!
