Zeal Cares was founded by 14-year-old Julia Wykoff. Her interest in body products began after hearing about the challenges of dry skin a family friend was facing during cancer therapy. Julia was inspired to help children going through the same treatment. Her all natural, antioxidant-rich products are created to deeply hydrate lips and skin.
For every lip balm purchased, another is gifted to a child during cancer therapy.
Have you ever felt inspired to do something for a greater good, but you were not sure how? When I was 9, I found inspiration after attending a Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) conference. During this conference, my eyes were opened to the many struggles that children around the world face every day. I walked away from the MMUN experience determined to make a meaningful impact in the world.
Then I got a new perspective when hearing about a friend’s mother who was battling breast cancer. One of her challenges during chemotherapy was dry skin. Even though having dry skin may seem insignificant while being treated for cancer, it can be extremely bothersome. I decided to direct my efforts towards children going through similar experiences. Specifically, I was interested in making moisturizing body products to help theirskin. I decided to start with lip balmand my journey began with creating the perfect formula.
My family’s kitchen turned into a science lab. I tried many flavors and tested multiple formulas. I learned basic lessons about combining the ingredients to create a solid (but not too solid!) lip balm. I also wanted to make sure that I used all natural and organic (when possible) ingredients.
With the formula perfected, I began selling my product to friends in my classes. Word spread around school and in town. After that, I launched a website and started selling at local market. For every lip balm purchased, another is gifted to a child or young adult with cancer.
I have been visiting hospitals around the country and setting up “Flavor Counters” where children can choose their favorite Zeal Cares lip balm flavors from the many different ones that I have created. If I’m unable to visit a hospital that would like my lip balm, I send boxes of lip balm to the Child Care Specialists to pass out to the cancer patients. Right now I am partnering with hospitals and organizations across the country including MD Anderson in Houston, Dana Farber in Boston, Lurie Children’s in Chicago and Ronald McDonald House.
Zeal Cares has now gifted thousands of lip balms and is growing quickly. My goal is to provide high quality, effective moisturizing products to as many children with cancer around the county as possible. Please join me on this journey, it’s just the beginning!
