I’ve always been one of those moms who shrug a bit when others encourage me to “take a time-out and recharge my batteries.” Not only is it easier said than done, but if I’m honest, I’ve always found it a little boring. For me, a real respite is quality time with my three daughters. Whether it’s an evening home painting our toes or sharing giggles sitting side-by side in a salon, those are the escapes that soothe my soul.
So, it was no surprise when my daughter’s only wish for her 18th birthday was an escape to the next level- Taylor wanted time at a spa where she could lounge in a white, fluffy robe; get a full-body massage (finally old enough); and escape with me and our two best friends, Tracy and Madeline. Knowing it was a splurge, we justified the trip as the ultimate, coming-of-age, mother-daughter getaway.
Tucked away on the shores of Lake Austin (a beautiful, wooded bend of the Colorado river), the glass-like waters glistened as we drove through the gates of Lake Austin Spa Resort. Our room was a darling bungalow with water views, a front porch and the smell of relaxing lavender. In minutes flat, we had all changed into our white, fluffy robes and were headed to brunch. Everything had a taste of the Texas Hill Country with a flare of shabby-chic elegance and a deep sense of relaxation.
We soaked up the warm winter sunshine as we talked and ate on the dock outside the main house with a view of the garden where the chefs had grown our salads and fixings.
With an eye for adventure, we caught sight of the giant hydrobikes and dared one another to trade our robes for wet suits. Peddling against the current, we quickly called it quits with a comical finish just in time for our scheduled treatments.
In honor of Taylor’s birthday wish, we all enjoyed incredible massages with views of the pool, lake and wooded hills as far as we could see. In a blissful daze, Tracy and I made our way to the relaxation lounge with a glass of wine while the girls took a quick siesta in the hammocks lining the banks of Lake Austin. A full day of free activities allowed each of us a solo choice of fun. Between our group, we attended a cooking class; exercised in the gym; swam in an indoor pool barn; and even meditated with a little yoga on the side.
Hands-down, the most memorable moment was the combination of angst and giddiness we felt that evening as the four of us walked into the elegant dining room wearing no makeup and still wearing our robes. As other guests did the same, we were immediately at ease and quickly preoccupied with multi-course, culinary masterpieces in perfect-sized portions.
The sun had set, and we were drawn back to the dock now draped in lights reflecting off the water. We sat for hours sharing stories and laughing until our sides hurt. It wasn’t until we climbed into those comfy beds that the robes finally came off. And while I’m sure we all fell asleep that night smiling ear to ear, the memories alone will forever melt my stress with just the vision of my daughter -the grown woman she’d become- laughing hysterically in her white, fluffy robe.
