Port Arthur, Texas is a city with a rich history. It was founded in the late 1800s as a port for shipping timber and rice from the East Texas forests and fields to other parts of the country.

The discovery of oil in the early 20th century transformed Port Arthur into a booming industrial center. The city became home to major refineries, chemical plants, and shipyards that helped fuel America’s growth.

During World War II, Port Arthur played an important role in supporting the war effort. Many local residents went off to fight overseas while those who remained worked tirelessly to produce essential supplies for troops abroad.

One of the top things to do in Port Arthur is crabbing. Head down to Sea Rim State Park and try your hand at catching some blue crabs. It’s a fun activity for all ages and perfect for families that enjoy spending time together. Not to mention, they’re delicious to eat!

While you are there, try your hand at kayaking through the marshes on one of the beginner, intermediate or expert water trails. Looking for a real experience, why not plan on spending the night on the FLOATING PRIMITIVE CAMPSITE! For only $15 a night, you & your family (Max 4 People) can boat or kayak 2 miles out to the campsite and sleep floating under the stars! Not your cup of tea? You can also rent a cabin, RV Pad or camp on the beach! Whatever your preference, there is something for everyone at this park.

Other activities available at this park include birding (Many migratory birds traveling the Central Flyway stop at this park), fishing (Red Drum, Trout and Flounder thrive here) or just walking along the beach to collect shells. Whatever you look to do, be sure to plan on being there for a while. This park offers over 5 miles of gulf shoreline and 4,000 acres of marshlands.

Looking to venture offshore? You can also opt to take a guided fishing tour if you’re not familiar with the area. Many of the local captains will take you to the best spots and insure that you will not come back empty handed! 

Looking for a different kind of water adventure? How about heading into the marshes on an Air Boat? These boats allow you to take in the scenery and get as up close as you can to nature like no other! Experience the birds, the beautiful trees and marshes along with a few wild creatures! Keep your eyes peeled for gators, otters and maybe even a few cows!? You’ll never know what you might see in the marsh!

Must See Museum

There are some great attractions to explore while you’re in Port Arthur. Be sure to visit the Museum of the Gulf Coast, it’s a must-see museum that celebrates stories and artifacts from the region. This is an interactive space where visitors can learn about the history of Port Arthur, the local culture and its people. You can also see historic items like a replica of a shrimp boat, WWII artifacts, antique cars and much more. The museum also hosts special events like art exhibits and film screenings throughout the year.

Port Arthur is known famously as the home of Janis Joplin. However, did you realize that there are also over 80 music legends, 78 professional athletes and 40 actors, politicians and artists? There’s even an honest to God ‘Oscar’ that was donated by a woman who won for Costume Design back in the 1940s! You will surely be surprised when you discover how many people you know that came from Port Arthur!

Start off your day at Kimmy’s Cafe for the most delicious breakfast and gigantic cups of coffee! (Our fave is the churro waffles and the Green Juice! Delish!!)

If you want to experience some of the best Cajun cuisine around, then make sure to check out Larry’s French Market & Cajun Restaurant. They offer a variety of dishes such as gumbo, crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, and more.

Gator Tacos you say? Check out Tia Juanitas Fish Camp for the best tacos and margaritas in town!

For those who love seafood, stop by The Schooner Restaurant where they serve fresh fish daily along with other popular dishes like crab cakes and shrimp alfredo. And if you want a unique dining experience with an outdoor patio overlooking Sabine Lake while enjoying a cold beer or cocktail then look no further than Neches River Wheelhouse!

But if soul food is what you crave, head down to Robert’s Bar-B-Q where their slow-cooked meats are served alongside traditional sides including potato salad and cornbread made from scratch.
