Between Thanksgiving preparations, school activities, holiday shopping and family gatherings, November can feel like a full-time job for busy parents. This month’s Parent Hack is simple: Create a Holiday Command Center in just 10 minutes and keep your entire family organized through December.
All you need is a wall calendar, a few sticky notes, a clipboard and a designated spot in your kitchen or family room.
Step 1: Color-Code Your Calendar. Assign each family member a color. Add school events, holiday parties, travel plans and important deadlines. Everyone can see what’s happening at a glance.
Step 2: Create Three Lists. Label them “To Buy,” “To Do” and “Don’t Forget.” Include everything from Thanksgiving groceries to teacher gifts and school holiday programs.
Step 3: Add a Family Wish List. Give everyone a sticky note to write down one holiday activity they’d love to enjoy together. This helps prioritize experiences without overscheduling.
Step 4: Schedule a Sunday Reset. Spend 10 minutes each Sunday reviewing the upcoming week, assigning responsibilities and updating your lists.
Bonus Houston Parent Hack: Add a section for local holiday events, such as Houston Zoo Lights, neighborhood festivals and school performances. Keep tickets and confirmations in one folder.
The best part? Kids can participate, too! Younger children can decorate the calendar, while tweens and teens can manage their own schedules Less chaos, fewer forgotten commitments and more time for family fun. That’s a holiday win!
