Houston Families Sing Songs of Our Fathers

Nothing swells the heart with pride like singing songs that honor our country. It’s a tradition that has sadly started to fade, with fewer schools teaching songs to our kids. This 4th of July, join these Houston families in honoring our great country by singing patriotic songs with your family. We have the lyrics for some of the most popular songs here, if you need them!

THIS LAND IS MY LAND
(by Woody Guthrie)

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
And I went walking that ribbon of highway
And saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me the golden valley
This land was made for you and me

AMERICA (MY COUNTRY ‘TIS OF THEE)
(Lyrics by Samuel F. Smith)

My country, ’tis of Thee,
Sweet Land of Liberty
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.

THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER
(words by Francis Scott Key)

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
(by Katharine Lee Bates)

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME
(lyrics by Patrick Gilmore)

When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We’ll give him a hearty welcome then,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Oh, the men will cheer the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out,
And we’ll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we’ll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.

GOD BLESS AMERICA
(by Irving Berlin)

God bless America,
Land that I love,
Stand beside her and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above;
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans white with foam,
God bless America,
My home, sweet home.
God bless America,
My home, sweet home.
