Teen Trends Fall 2013

By Eva Prappas

As we head back to school, everybody wants to have their fall wardrobes together and look their best. There are many fun ways to incorporate trends that will suit your style this season.

Let’s start with skinny jeans or leggings. You can’t go wrong with patterned, bleached, distressed or colored. Begin with the distressed or bleached jean for ideas on the grunge trend. Add a plaid top with a leather jacket. I know this is sounding a bit rock- and-roll for young girls. To soften the look, opt for a color leather, pleather or vinyl jacket, rather than the harsh, black motorcycle. You can add an embellishment, such as studded or glittered lapel. Plaids in a candy color will give a more modern preppy look. Mingle the plaids with mini florals and faded denim for a girly grunge. Any boot works, although you will see thicker soles on the boots this fall.

trends1Patterned, colored jean or legging with a color-blocked, striped or lace top: a long blazer or cardigan with embroidery and a ballet shoe or ankle bootie will put you right in step. This is a great look. Fresh and sporty.

Boyfriend jeans are also making a comeback. Roll them at the ankle. Add a tank top with a crop top over. It may be fine during the summer to wear the crop top alone, but for back to school, I would add a tank under. We are also seeing printed animal faces on sweaters that are super-cute. This would look great with a Converse tennis shoe. Neons are still in. If wearing it on a top is too much for you, make your tennis shoe pop with a bright colored Converse. Neons are also good in a scarf, bag or belt.

Sheer fabric is another trend that is hard to see your young child walk out the door wearing. How about a lace dress topped with a sheer floral top tied at the waist? Make it feminine with a fuller skirt and a low wedge. Or you can wear the longer sheer asymmetrical hem skirt with a long statement t-shirt. Add a cardigan, leggings and a bootie. Layering will add dimension plus give added modesty.

Fur. Since a coat or jacket, even faux, can be a bit grown up, try visiting a vintage store and look for a fur purse or muffler. Add this to another fall trend, the floral dress, possibly with a rounded shoulder. Although this falls floral should be richer and darker in color, you will also see a deep array of sunset colors such as red and orange. Top this off with a cropped jacket either with a faux fur or embroidered collar.

To sum it up:

Jeans: skinny, patterned, bleached, distressed, colored, boyfriend.
Tops: Color block, stripe, plaid, sheer, lace.
Jackets: Long blazers and coats, leather, cropped with rounded shoulders.
Sweaters: animal face prints, embroidered.
Colors: red, orange, neon, deep florals.
Boots: Knee, ankle, lug soles.
Fur, neon
