Charlie (right), who is the first licensed driver with diabetes in the history of IndyCar to win an IndyCar race, has the same attitude. And the two met on Sunday, June 29, prior to the Grand Prix of Houston. They compared notes about living with T1D and talked about how they have overcome it to pursue their dreams – Charlie as a member of the Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Race Team and Robert as a student at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory striving to attend the college of his choice.

You wouldn’t know it by looking at them, but Robert Brown and Charlie Kimball share a life-altering diagnosis: Type 1 Diabetes. Robert (left), who was diagnosed nearly eight years ago, has taken on an active role with the Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of JDRF, including mentoring younger kids when they are diagnosed, and raising money for the local walk (more than $70,000 to date). He said, “If I didn’t do anything about it, it could beat me, and I don’t like to lose.”
