Fall in Love with the Houston Zoo’s Newest Baby

Male Masai Giraffe Born on Sept. 30

The Houston Zoo is proud to announce the birth of a male Masai giraffe, born in the afternoon on Mon., Sept. 30. The calf was born to first-time mom, Kamili, behind-the-scenes at the McGovern Giraffe Habitat, weighing in at 128 pounds and standing just over six feet tall. This is also the first calf sired by four-year-old, Joshua.

After a two-hour labor, both mom and the yet-to-be-named calf are doing well and are currently bonding behind the scenes with keeper and veterinary teams watching over the pair. After a few days alone with his mother, the new calf will make his public debut.

The Houston Zoo provides funds for local people in Africa to protect giraffes in the wild. These funds provide salaries to those arresting illegal hunters, providing medical support, and watching over wild giraffes in Africa. Simply by visiting the Houston Zoo, guests help save Masai giraffes in the wild as a portion of every admission ticket is donated to conservation efforts protecting species, like giraffes, in their natural habitats.

The Houston Zoo connects communities with animals, inspiring action to save wildlife. Established in 1922, today the Zoo is a leading conservation and education nonprofit organization providing care to thousands of animals. All while remaining a cherished destination for fun, family, and inspiration for all of Houston’s diverse communities. The Houston Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation.
