Summer is here and I couldn’t be happier!!

I think I was a lizard in another life. Basking in the sun with a cool breeze on my face and a slushy drink in my hand was my happy place when I was a kid. I LIVED on the beach and couldn’t wait to work on my tan. Fast forward and it still holds true today. I just happen to wear a lot more sunscreen these days.

As you and yours are finding your happy place this summer, HFM wanted to offer some suggestions on ways to beat the heat and make some great memories before the lazy days pass. If you are anything like me, battling the screen has become a much bigger issue than it used to be. So, to combat that we are hitting the road. Looking for a great destination that’s close by? How about Waco? Our own Casey Johnson headed that way with her daughter for a fun-filled weekend jaunt that really impressed them. Both educational and fun, their itinerary was full of activities for all ages. If you are looking for a Texas road trip, we highly recommend heading to Waco. (Look for more ideas of TX Road trip destinations online at houstonfamilymagazine.com)

Due to the heat, many of you will be headed out to local pools or the beaches this summer. With that in mind, we wanted to address questions surrounding swimming lessons. Kimberly Blaker’s article on ‘Overcoming your child’s fears” is a must read for any families who will be hitting the water. We want you to be safe and smart when it comes to the water.

Not hitting the beach? How about hitting a baseball?? If you love the Astros, but are sometimes overwhelmed at the park with the kids, SugarLand’s Skeeters at Constellation Field may be the answer. HFM visited the park with a few of our Kid Ambassadors and had a blast running around the splashpad, playing basketball and eating ice cream – oh and watching some great baseball, too! This uber family-friendly field is just the right size for a great afternoon or evening out under the stars. Come out on July 13th for HFM Family Fun Night and check out all of the amenities the park has to offer with even more vendors and kids activities! See our ad on page 47 for more information.

With the celebration of our nation’s Independence Day, we know many of you will be hosting parties at home. I know I’m always challenged to come up with a menu that works for everyone, so we tasked our friend, Michelle Morris of Southern Cadence to come up with something yummy for us. I think she did a great job – see her Backyard recipes to see if you agree.

Whatever you decide to do this summer, we hope you are enjoying some down time. Life passes by so quickly, it’s so hard to remember to take the time to just recharge those batteries before the chaos of the school year kicks back in next month.

As always, thank you for your continued support of HFM!
