Give Your Kids the Magic of Broadway This Holiday

Theatre Under The Stars presents Disney’s The Little Mermaid at the Hobby Center

Celebrate the holidays with Theatre Under The Stars and Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The hit Broadway musical comes to the Hobby Center Dec. 7 through 24.

“For Christmas, we wanted to offer a show that the whole family can experience together,” said Dan Knechtges, Artistic Director for TUTS. “The Little Mermaid is the perfect holiday outing. It’s going to be a spectacular production and an opportunity to create special memories with your children that will last a lifetime.”

Knechtges will also direct this new production of the Disney musical.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story. The musical takes you under the sea with Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, who wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

When The Little Mermaid premiered on the big screen in November of 1989, it ushered in a new Golden Age of Disney animated films. As the first animated fairy tale since Sleeping Beauty (1959), the lovely young Ariel introduced a new generation of children to the royal court of Disney princesses. The success of the film paved the way for beloved animated leading ladies like Belle, Pocahontas, Tiana and Moana.

The undersea classic also revived the concept of the musical film for Disney animation. The Tony-winning songwriting duo of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (Little Shop of Horrors) offered a Broadway pedigree which charmed audiences and made the movie’s soundtrack an immediate classic. Irresistible songs like “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World” are still at the cornerstone of the Disney canon.

In January of 2008, Disney Theatrical Group brought The Little Mermaid to the Broadway stage, with composer Alan Menken returning to create an expanded score. The show has become a favorite for audiences around the world. This brand-new production arrives just in time for the holidays.

“This production is being created exclusively for Houston audiences,” said Knechtges. “We are so proud to be a part of this vibrant, diverse community, and The Little Mermaid is our gift to all Houstonians. We want families to come together and experience the magic of live professional theatre.”
