Twenty-five years ago, Theatre Under The Stars came together with The Walt Disney Company to create the first production of Beauty and the Beast. Houston audiences went wild over this magical production.
The musical starring Susan Egan as “Belle” and Terrence Mann as “Beast” sold out, and the run at the Music Hall was extended multiple times.
Beauty and the Beast went on to run on to great success on Broadway where it ran for 13 years. It also became an international sensation, and has been produced in 37 countries.
Theatre Under The Stars continues the 50th Anniversary Season celebration with a new production of Beauty and the Beast for Houston audiences just in time for the holiday season. See it live on stage at the Hobby Center December 8 through 23!
TUTS Turns the BIG 5-0!
Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is celebrating their 50th Anniversary Season!
Founded in 1968 by native Texan, Frank M. Young. At the time, Young was a pre-med student working part-time at Baylor, part-time at the Houston Grand Opera. He saw the newly built Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park as the perfect opportunity to put on a free summer show during the slow season, so he pulled together a team to make it happen. What Young and his volunteers ended up producing was not an opera, but a musical: a single evening performance of Bells Are Ringing that brought a crowd of 4,500 to its feet, and a tradition of top-notch musical theatre to the community for decades to come. Theatre Under The Stars was born.
The special anniversary season showcases The Wiz, Mamma Mia!, Ragtime and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.
