Meet Conrad deLeon, Houston Family Magazine’s 2020 kid Ambassador, The Carpenter and the Orthopedic Surgeon

Tell us about yourself.
I am 14 years old and I am in the 9th grade. I have been a Houston Family Magazine Kid Ambassador for two years. I enjoy playing and watching all sports including baseball, football and basketball. I was CyFalls HS starting quarterback and safety.  I’ve played catcher, pitcher and middle infield for baseball.  I also have straight A’s and participate in clubs. I played French Horn in my middle school band for 2 years – and I really enjoyed it! Besides school and sports, I enjoy listening to all kinds of music (classical, Frank Sinatra, rap, country, pop), hanging out with my friends and spending time with my family.

Based on your extracurricular activities, what sport do you excel at? Do you train, how often?
As a student athlete, I train up to 5 times a week, if not more. I enjoy all sports, but I have more of a connection to baseball. I like baseball because the sport teaches you how to have patience, discipline and a work hard mindset.

Tell us about your woodworking hobby, some of the things you’ve built and how did you get interested in woodworking?
In the 8th grade, I found out that my middle school had a woodworking class, so I was ecstatic to join. I loved the architecture of houses, buildings and furniture, but never had the opportunity to build something of my own, until now. Ever since I joined the woodworking class, I have built a birdhouse, a treasure box and even a rocking chair.

What are your future career aspirations?
I would like to become an orthopedic surgeon. I want to pursue this job, due to the fact that I like helping others, as well as my curiosity of how the human body functions and manipulates.

Tell us about your most memorable photoshoot as am HFM Kid Ambassador
Even though all of my photoshoots for the Houston Family Magazine have been so much fun, I believe one of my most memorable photoshoots was the photoshoot of the Galveston Bay Charter Fishing.

Where would you like to be photographed next?
I think a place that would be very interesting place to be photographed in is the Children’s Museum of Houston, the Houston Symphony or even the iFly indoor skydiving experience in Memorial Houston.

What do kids do better than adults?
I believe one thing that kids do better than adults is see life without the worry of judgement and enjoy life as it is – kids just love to have fun.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would like to tell the readers that no matter what people tell you, always strive to reach your dream and never give up.
