I have always loved sports and art. You are probably thinking “what an odd combination” and you are right. On the surface, it sounds like an extremely odd pairing. But, go with me on this train of thought. Both require a huge amount of talent and dedication. The passion required to literally push yourself to accomplish goals that have never been met – take a look at H-town’s own Simone Biles for example. Just breaking into her 20’s and she is already one of the most celebrated athletes on the planet. That drive started when she was only 6 years old on a day care field trip. (For more insight on Simone Biles – check out her Jan 2018 article with HFM online) So, introduce your children to a variety of experiences. You never know which one will start a spark!
The same could be said for all of the actors and artists out there. It might have started in Pre-K when they were finger-painting or maybe it was the first time they went to camp and had to put on a skit with their friends or took a dance lesson. The ambition to follow your bliss and hone your talents is truly a gift. For those fortunate enough to have that drive and focus, we want to celebrate you.
This issue offers insights on kids, players and coaches on how to play the game whether it is on the stage or the field. It’s always interesting to speak with people who are actually ‘living the dream’. Check out 2 of our HFM Kid Ambassadors, Lizzie and Robert. One is travelling all over the world following her theatrical dreams and the other just received a scholarship to play football! We have insights for Houston Dynamo Dads, AJ DeLaGarza and Boniek Garcia on why they feel playing sports is so important for kids. Last, we have an article to help you put your kids on the right path with the right coaches and support. All in line with making sure you are offering support and balance for your kids along the way!
Interested in introducing your kids to art & culture? Check out our Family Arts & Culture guide this issue for more information on all the wonderful theaters, museums, and dance programs available this season. There literally is something for everyone.
Last, as we head into the fall season, and hopefully the weather cools off a bit, it is time to start gearing up for Fall festivals! Houston Family has 2 of our own next month in Katy and Bellaire – Family FunFest on Oct 20 & 27th. Be sure to mark your calendars!
All the best,
Kimberly Davis-Guerra
