High School Student Creates Non-Profit to Relieve Homelessness in Houston

The Giving is a youth-led non-profit aiming to provide necessary resources for the homeless in the Houston Metropolitan area, improve their quality of life, and reintegrate them back into society through care packages.

Our projects at The Giving are committed to helping homeless individuals get on the road to wellness and stability by providing food, essential-care items, conversations, links to employment, food, and housing resources. Since founding, we have assembled 850 care packages/110 feminine product kits, distributed 650 care packages with a team of 37 volunteers, and hosted various youth education initiatives with local businesses and organizations. This summer, we are in the process of our Summer Distribution Series and would like to request a feature/ interview to spread the impact of our cause, empower young people to take action, and participate in civic responsibilities by working to eradicate homelessness in Houston.

Mission and Values

Mission Statement: To provide necessary resources for the homeless in the Houston Metropolitan area, improve their quality of life, and reintegrate them back into society.

How We Do It: At The Giving, we help homeless individuals get on the road to wellness and stability by providing food, essential-care items, conversations, links to employment, food, and housing resources.

What We Do: We provide young people the opportunity to learn and participate in civic responsibilities by targeting the homeless populations in Houston while practicing kindness and integrity.

Why do we value Kindness? Kindness improves relationships with ourselves, people surrounding us, and the person whom we helped. Kindness will ultimately become a habit. Persistent kindness will brighten the room and foster better relationships for future endeavors. Finally, kindness increases optimism, which may be all it takes to redirect someone onto the path to stable living conditions.

Why do we value Integrity? Integrity encourages better self-concept and confidence. When we do things that align with our morals and beliefs, we likely feel confident that we are a good person- which ultimately provokes feelings of a positive self-concept. Secondly, we become more reliable. When others see us acting with integrity, they tend to rely on and trust us more. Being dependable is a core aspect of success within our personal and professional relationships. Overall, through trial and error, integrity allows us to be our truest selves without conforming to other’s pressures and preferences.
