I guess the question is How can I not believe in Santa Claus? How can I not believe in the magic of the season? The most wonderful magic trick that brings millions of people across the globe a little joy in their lives.
I remember my childhood Christmases like it was yesterday. A dinner table surrounded by grandparents talking about things I knew nothing about. All I wanted is for everyone to go to sleep so Santa Claus could pay us a visit. My father would help me place my shoe in just the right location so that Santa would know where to leave my gifts. After that, I would head to my bed tossing and turning, and thinking about the magic that was about to take place in our home. I would wake to toys, smiles, hugs, and hot chocolate with Panetteone. In my mind, December 25 was a day of pure magic. I also remember my father taking my brother Gino and I to visit a small nursing home at Christmas. As a 10-year-old boy, I remember feeling sad for the residents, but it also left me with great appreciation for my own family.
As an adult, I know it’s not all about Santa, it is the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. A time to give to others and be thankful. Sometimes it gets a little crazy watching people in shopping centers finding gifts for their loved ones. Although the intentions are well-meaning, we sometimes lose ourselves in the chaos and forget the reason for the season.
Today, I remember being surrounded by my family. I can still feel their hugs and displays of affection. Life moves so quickly, and so much has separated my family, not to mention we live in different corners of the world. This season, I cling to those warm memories, a kiss from my partner, the letters my sons wrote to me, and the feeling of being together no matter what was going on in our lives.
What do you think your children will remember and value most about the Christmas season? Is it about presents or about quality time as a family?
This Christmas, my wish is that you find joy giving to others, making memories with your loved ones…while finding a little magic along the way. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all a Merry Christmas!
