Soup’s On, Houston!

January is the highlight month for the Souper Bowl of Caring, so this is when your family can make a difference.

By Amy Brazda

The month of January in H-Town may be the only one with cold enough temperatures to enable getting cozy on the couch with a good book and bowl of delicious soup…chicken noodle, tomato, potato… doesn’t matter what kind- a thick, hearty bowl warms the heart and soul. Although many enjoy that luxury, on any given day in southeast Texas,( including Houston) over 66,000 people go hungry. Even a more troubling statistic is that one in four of those are children. Fighting hunger in Houston should be tops on resolution lists in the New Year. With the assistance of the outstanding organization, the Souper Bowl of Caring, families in Houston can take part in “tackling hunger” right here in our community.

What is the Souper Bowl of Caring?

Souper Bowl of Caring is a national organization founded by a pastor and his youth group in 1990 in Columbia, South Carolina. What then was a small mission to fight hunger in a local community has grown to have celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015 and collected over $110 million in cash and food items. The original group wanted to relay a simple idea: As we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat. So, the Souper Bowl of Caring’s vision came to be,”Transform the time around the Super Bowl into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.”

Houston is a “Souper City!”
Houstonians are very proud of their city, especially recently when Harvey devastated our community, yet citizens helped one another in the most kind and generous ways. The city is home to positive city leaders in government, a medical community that is world-reknown, arts, culture, and entertainment that inspire, space program that thrills, a culinary community that is top-rate, and a landscape that is lush and green most all of the year due to nice weather and climate. There is no doubt how super our city is. However, what makes it so in the view of the Souper Bowl of Caring, is that Robert and Janice McNair, owners of the fi-kasino-online.net, were the very first NFL team to lend support, and have done so since 2004. Their belief was that being involved with the Souper Bowl of Caring would strengthen community involvement and change lives. With all of that huge amount of care, the national headquarters has since moved to right here in Houston just a few years ago.

How can your family help?
  1. Host a food drive or contribute to another that is being held at a school, church, synagogue or local business. Registration is easy at www.tacklehunger.org. Once your family has registered, the organization makes it simple for your food drive to be a success by sending you free materials such as posters, stickers, and a “playbook.” Display and watch your drive grow and donate items to the place or charity of your choice. When complete, report your collection back on your family’s page on the website.
  2. Donate at your local HEB, Kroger, or Randall’s by purchasing a pre-packaged bag of food or donating at the register. These donations will be distributed to the agencies that work with the Houston Food Bank, including the Brazos Valley, Galveston, and Montgomery County food banks.
  3. Take your family and volunteer at your local HEB or Kroger store on weekends leading up to the Super Bowl. As in- store volunteers, along with high school students who serve on the Local Advisory Board, your family will encourage customers to purchase a pre-packed bag or donate at checkout at the register. To find shifts for your family to volunteer go to www.tacklehunger.org/Houston.
Why should your family help?

Volunteering as a family will build a strong bond of unity. Caring for others in the community will promote generosity and kindness within the family as a whole. Specifically, for the Souper Bowl of Caring, your family’s help can reduce the huge numbers of citizens in Houston who are hungry, and make a huge impact on those families. Your family will see firsthand that hunger is evident among citizens of all backgrounds, cultures, genders, ages, and religions.

This month your family can…

January is the highlight month for the Souper Bowl of Caring, so this is when your family can make a difference. Mid-month an annual huge kick-off event takes place, which gathers  grocery stores, community leaders, dignitaries, and celebrities, Texans players and cheerleaders, student groups from around the city, and Souper Bowl of Caring staff. All start  promoting the drive via local media outlets, and begin readying boxes of food for distribution. In years past this event has been held at NRG Stadium and San Jacinto Area Boy Scouts building.

This year’s Community Kickoff and Pep Rally takes place today, Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at

Cockrell Scout Center 2225 North Loop West 77008.  From 5 am-10 am, as a Pep rally Volunteer, enjoy refreshments, live entertainment, all media there(my kids and I have done last 6 years! as they served as local youth board members, but all community welcome…early but worthwhile morning). From 5 am-4 pm you can drop off donations…dry goods, canned low sodium vegetables, rice, beans, canned proteins, and boxed items.

Register your family or group so that you can participate from January 15-February 4. The Big Game will occur this year on February 4 in Minneapolis at US Bank Stadium.
