What a fun few months for the team at Houston Family magazine! We kicked off our HFM Kid Ambassador program with 24 of the best kids from all over the Houston area! From interviewing celebrities to television appearances, photo shoots to volunteering at our recent Camp Fairs, these kids have been BUSY! See their interview with Houstonian Dallas Dupree Young who stars on Nickelodeon’s “Cousins for Life” television series. Speaking of Camp Fair, we just wrapped up our 23rd year of bringing the day camp and summer camp experience to our readers, with three events over two weekends! Thank you to our camp representatives, vendors, sponsors, and for all of you for showing up and signing up for camps! In case you missed it, see our Camp Directory in this issue and on our website!
This month is National Nutrition month, we introduce you to Executive Chef Michelle Morris! She has the energy of an excited kid combined with a real passion for creating quality, healthy food experiences for all ages. Check out her story in our Mom.Me column. We also take a look at the serious topic of eating disorders and kids. We will continue to focus on these topics online so be sure to check out the website for some of these exclusive features.
March is also Texas History Month, so we take you to Washington-on-the-Brazos where on March 1, 1836, Texans wanting to create a new and separate country met during a convention in Washington, a town on the Brazos River. The next day, March 2, 1836, they signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Our writer, Valerie Wells writes about the history and gives great suggestions on what to do with the family while visiting Texas’ birthplace. The Texas History trail continues as we introduce you to J.P. Bryan, founder of The Bryan Museum in Galveston, who is also a descendant of Stephen F. Austin. His story is pretty amazing.
Spring break is coming up…and there are so many places to visit with the family! On our most recent visit to Galveston Island, we were amazed at all the new “stuff” for families! We recommend you plan an overnight or two – as there is so much to see and do on the Island! No matter where you go for Spring Break, tell us about it. We want to see your photos and hear about your experiences. You can tag us on Instragram with #hfmkids or post to our Facebook page. Who knows…you may win a pretty cool prize for sharing your family with us.
At Houston Family, we have so much going on and it’s only March! For daily updates and happenings, subscribe to our daily newsletter on our website at houstonfamilymagazine.com.
Lastly, March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day to honor women and girls around the world and reflect upon the progress that’s been made thanks to brave and extraordinary pioneers along the way. As a mother of two young adult daughters, it’s important to me they understand and honor all these women pioneers who came before us. May all of our daughters seek every opportunity that life offers them!
On that note, I leave you with this…
“Here’s to good women, may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.”
Cheers!
