Takeushigherlearning.com recently introduced a digital version of its unique study skills course, Systematic Learning Strategies. The instruction provided nurtures students’ executive function skills but, more importantly, gives them the ability to choose techniques best suited for their learning styles. The course teaches self-evaluation skills that empower students to independently measure progress toward academic goals, and change techniques if improvement is needed. Instead of, “I just don’t get it and can’t do this,” students determine for themselves why a certain approach is not working. They then choose a technique better suited to the task and to their learning style. Mom and dad may not even know that their child encountered, then overcame, difficulty in completing an assignment.
Taught in various schools within the Houston area for eighteen years, the course was designed to meet the challenges of organizing and processing information in a world of data overload. Without specific strategies, cognitive tasks can be frustrating and lead to negative self-concepts and stress. Schoolwork as a stressor often expands beyond the student to the parents. The approach in this eLearning platform is to provide study skills instruction that develops metacognition (analysis of one’s cognitive processes), giving the student the ability to self-evaluate and choose more effective techniques and approaches. A high school in Houston recently selected the Systematic Learning Strategies course for its summer enrichment study skills program for upper middle and high school.
The course lessons include:
- Self-evaluation
- Setting and Achieving Goals
- Getting Organized and Managing Time
- Improving Study Habits
- Taking Notes in Class
- Reading & Taking Notes from Textbooks
- Memory Strategies
- Preparing for & Taking Tests
In the months to come, Takeushigherlearning.com will be adding two additional courses: Writing an Effective Essay and Algebra Basics.
It should be noted that the people behind the creation of these courses at takeushigherlearning.com are teachers, not employees of an edu-business. They have experienced firsthand the obstacles to learning experienced by adolescents, fully aware of the fact that students are often not taught how to learn. Over the years, they have honed and refined instruction in the skills and techniques that make students successful from upper middle school through college.
Takeushigherlearning.com is a great resource for adolescents! Their Systematic Learning Strategies course has been described by parents as “life-changing.” This course has transformed below average and average students into above average students that now enjoy learning and the success that comes from their newly-acquired study skills.
