Second Servings of Houston, founded in 2014, is Houston’s only prepared and perishable food rescue organization. They pick up unsold and unserved food from regulated food businesses, such as hotels, distributors, and retailers, and deliver it safely to approved charitable meal sites (soup kitchens, shelters, low-income housing and many others.) It is a simple concept with a simple solution. With 1 in 5 people facing food insecurity in Harris County and an estimated 31% of available food going to waste, it is essential that we redirect perfectly edible surplus away from the landfill to the people who really need it.
