HFM and Kid Ambassador Corey’L recently sat down to talk with 11 year old aspiring fashion designer and creator of JAW by Design, Jayden Washer. We wanted to know what inspires him to create.
How did you get into fashion design?
My mom is a fashion designer. I used to watch her sew when I was younger. She’s helped me learn how to sew and how to work with different types of fabrics. I am still learning, so it’s great to have her support.
Where do you pull inspiration for your designs?
The Houston downtown area is a big inspiration for me. I like glamorous fashions, like breakfast at Tiffany’s and Marilyn Monroe. I also like a lot of sequins and color.
What are your must have “tools” for designing?
Definitely a good machine, hand needles, sharp scissors and a serger.
Do you sew your designs yourself?
Yes I do all of the construction myself. My mom helps me with logistics like if I don’t know how big a dart should be, she will tell me. I go to her and ask questions about shape, fit, everything. She has taught me everything I know about fashion.
Do you have a fashion school in mind that you’d like to attend?
No, my dream school is Harvard or Rice University. I love fashion and art, but it is important to learn the business side of things, too.
You’re getting to present some of your designs at NY Fashion week, can you tell us more?
I am very excited! I have 10 pieces to show at NY Fashion Week!
Who is your favorite fashion icon?
Alexander McQueen and Oscar Del a Renta.
If you could have your own fashion line, what style garments would you design?
Just pieces that would give people confidence and make them feel glamorous, too!
Do you have a favorite textile you enjoy working with?
Not really. I do like jersey because it’s so soft, but I don’t want to limit myself. My mom is still teaching me about different textiles and how they move, flow, and sew.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself and your goals?
I plan on learning more and doing more fashion shows. My dream would be to open a boutique.

Interview questions by HFM Kid Ambassador Corey’L
What inspires you to create/design?
“My mom is into fashion design too and my dad works with film production. So I kind of grew up around it!
How have you seen your designing work positively to impact others?
In my last show I was talking with some of my models. They were inspired to find out that I am going to fashion week! The models were saying if I am going to fashion week, then they can push themselves to do more, too.
What were some challenges in starting your business & how did you overcome challenges?
Well right now one of the challenges is with school. But at the end of the day it is your passion, so you push yourself to do what you need to do!
What advice do you have for me as I work on building my own clothing brand and designs?
“Go for it! You can do it! Find something to motivate and inspire you. One story I heard in school was about these guys who climbed a cliff. It was a hard to climb, but when they reached the top, they were amazed. Use stories like this one to push you!
